Summary

"Quick, cutting wit 。 。 。 a keen ear。"--The New York Times Book Review

Hollywood's newest wunderkind is Peter Alan Nelsen, the brilliant, erratic director known as the King of Adventure。

His films make billions, but his manners make enemies。 What the boy king wants, he gets, and what Nelsen wants is for Elvis to comb the country for the wife and infant child the film-school flunkout dumped en route to becoming the third-biggest filmmaker in America。 It's the kind of case Cole can handle in his sleep--until it turns out to be a nightmare。 For when Cole finds Nelsen's ex-wife in a small Connecticut town, she's nothing like he expects。 She has some unwanted--and very nasty--mob connections, which means Elvis could be opening an East Coast branch of his P。I。 office。。。at the bottom of the Hudson River。

"Elvis [Cole] is the greatest 。 。 。 [ he is] perhaps the best detective to come along since Travis McGee。"--San Diego Tribune

"[Crais is] far better at the private-eye-novel racket than most writers。"--Newsweek

I enjoyed this book。 There is nothing particularly original about the plot and the two protagonists are the tough men who rescue the weak。 However it is well written and Pike is an interesting character

My all-time favorite book (by Robert Crais, and in general)! I've re-read it at least 3 times, and I'm tempted to re-read it again! Plus I love how the early versions of his novels always have just-out-of-frame Disney characters doing despicable things; it slays me every time!!! I enjoyed the book。 The language was hard at times。 I like the actions and humor in the story。 I would recommend this book to people who like thrillers with mystery。

Good story。 Typical Crais。

It was better than book two。 I enjoyed the move to the east coast and felt the story made much more sense then a lot of others where the main character gets out of their standard setting。 I liked that he relied and interacted very little with the local cops。 Overall, a good adventure story。

So, one might ask, what prevented you from giving this book five stars? Well, I'll tell ya; it was the way Crais stretched credulity beyond the breaking point。 No, not because Elvis Cole and Joe Pike were somehow able to fly from Los Angeles to NYC, each armed with handguns and even a sawed-off auto shotgun。 Nope。 No, the straw that broke the camel's proverbial back was Crais writing that Elvis was able to, on multiple occasions mind you, find a parking space in Manhattan, within easy walking di So, one might ask, what prevented you from giving this book five stars? Well, I'll tell ya; it was the way Crais stretched credulity beyond the breaking point。 No, not because Elvis Cole and Joe Pike were somehow able to fly from Los Angeles to NYC, each armed with handguns and even a sawed-off auto shotgun。 Nope。 No, the straw that broke the camel's proverbial back was Crais writing that Elvis was able to, on multiple occasions mind you, find a parking space in Manhattan, within easy walking distance of his destinations。 Every time。 See what I mean? Seriously, this is among the best in this very enjoyable series。 It often seems the case that when an author pens many issues within a popular series, the best entries tend to be the earlier works。 Perhaps the character grows stale or the author runs out of new ideas, but no matter, Crais manages to deliver the goods repeatedly, and here is a great example of his product。 Cole is wise cracking as ever, but doesn't seem to be reaching for the bleachers with each witticism。 Pike is taciturn and capable, a constant menacing force whenever he appears (albeit a little too superman-ish), and a large reason for Cole's success。 Wouldn't be near as interesting without their chemistry。Finally, there exists here a really good plot。 Engaging, surprising and well crafted。 Perhaps there is one twist too many, but that's certainly debatable。 Crais manages to evoke the cold of the Northeast well, and setting this story in NY and its environs was clever inasmuch as it removed Cole from his usual LA digs。 Of course, he still manages to know lots of people, former cops, etc。, that can facilitate his tasks and successes。 Still, Cole manages to demonstrate some grit and admirable loyalty to doing what's right despite personal risk。 Gotta respect that in a wise-cracking PI。 If this is your maiden voyage into the Elvis Cole series, good for you-- it's a great beginning。 If, on the other hand, you're like me, jumping around in a series as convenience permits, make sure to place this on the list of ones to include。 Just make sure you're not double parked in Manhattan when you go to pick it up。 。。。more

A really enjoyable read。 Cole and Pike venture out of their usual LA surroundings to the East Coast in autumn / fall。 There are some nice callbacks to previous novels, which don't demand that the reader has any previous knowledge。 The plot fits together nicely and all the loose ends are tied up nicely。 There's plenty of the dark humour we enjoy, and it's nice to see the guys in a different backdrop。 A really enjoyable read。 Cole and Pike venture out of their usual LA surroundings to the East Coast in autumn / fall。 There are some nice callbacks to previous novels, which don't demand that the reader has any previous knowledge。 The plot fits together nicely and all the loose ends are tied up nicely。 There's plenty of the dark humour we enjoy, and it's nice to see the guys in a different backdrop。 。。。more

Solid bookMy first book from this author which I really enjoye。 It seems to start slow but it just a setup of the characters, once events pick up it becomes an entertaining tale。 The duo Cole & Pike is fantastic。

Good read。 I was engaged early on, page 3 maybe。 I should say I’m a new Robert Crais Fan。 I was early voting last year in a library and picked up one of his books。 And so it began。 I’ve now read at least 4 of his books。 He’s no Silva or Sanford, but he’s no slouch either。

Elvis meets the mafiaIt was an okay read。 I haven't read a Crais novel for some time。 I found the style of writing to be disconcerting。 The story was fine。 The characters were well developed。 But I just haven't been able to put the weird way of telling the story。 Elvis meets the mafiaIt was an okay read。 I haven't read a Crais novel for some time。 I found the style of writing to be disconcerting。 The story was fine。 The characters were well developed。 But I just haven't been able to put the weird way of telling the story。 。。。more

This is the 3rd in the series, so I have now read the first 4 (I started with #4, then back tracked)。OK, not as charged as the other three I've read (#1, 2 and 4)。 Some truly unlikable characters, not that all characters should be teddy bears。But I will soldier on, 16 to go。 Cole is a fine character in the vein of Spenser。 Smart alecky, willing to bend the rules, and to use some muscle and firepower。 This is the 3rd in the series, so I have now read the first 4 (I started with #4, then back tracked)。OK, not as charged as the other three I've read (#1, 2 and 4)。 Some truly unlikable characters, not that all characters should be teddy bears。But I will soldier on, 16 to go。 Cole is a fine character in the vein of Spenser。 Smart alecky, willing to bend the rules, and to use some muscle and firepower。 。。。more

The authors writing has come some way from The Monkey's Raincoat。 Lullaby Town is a pleasant, smooth read, with interesting characters that'll make sure the journey is also an entertaining one。But I just can't appreciate the overabundance of testosterone and bravado。 I'm not nitpicking, but I really feel that Elvis and Joe are woo wild, simply barging into the territories of mafias and gangs; taking on more than 10 armed men head on and just being too fearless and taking too many risks。 It's not The authors writing has come some way from The Monkey's Raincoat。 Lullaby Town is a pleasant, smooth read, with interesting characters that'll make sure the journey is also an entertaining one。But I just can't appreciate the overabundance of testosterone and bravado。 I'm not nitpicking, but I really feel that Elvis and Joe are woo wild, simply barging into the territories of mafias and gangs; taking on more than 10 armed men head on and just being too fearless and taking too many risks。 It's not just unconvincing, but a little cringy at best。Not really a great read, but good enough as a casual one。 。。。more

Wow, what an utterly ridiculous premise for a novel that only kept getting worse。I'm embarrassed i actually read the final 60 pages。 Impressive that Crais came back from this monstrosity。 Wow, what an utterly ridiculous premise for a novel that only kept getting worse。I'm embarrassed i actually read the final 60 pages。 Impressive that Crais came back from this monstrosity。 。。。more

In this mystery Elvis Cole and Joe Pike travel from L。A。 to Connecticut to find the missing ex-wife and son of a spoiled billionaire movie director。 This is another extremely fast-paced book。 What looked like a quick job, became a total mess when Elvis finds that the Mafia have a hold on the ex-wife。 This story would make a long flight seem short。 Enjoy!

Elvis Cole is a private eye in California。 He is funny, wise cracking, and very good at his job。 His partner is Joe Pike, an enigmatic and mostly silent, deadly partner。 Elvis has a friend at a movie studio and she recommends him to Peter Alan Nelson, mega movie mogul who is dubbed the king of action films。 He is also an egocentric jerk。 Peter was married very briefly before he became famous。 Now he wants Elvis to find his ex-wife and his son, who he has never met。 It doesn’t take much work for Elvis Cole is a private eye in California。 He is funny, wise cracking, and very good at his job。 His partner is Joe Pike, an enigmatic and mostly silent, deadly partner。 Elvis has a friend at a movie studio and she recommends him to Peter Alan Nelson, mega movie mogul who is dubbed the king of action films。 He is also an egocentric jerk。 Peter was married very briefly before he became famous。 Now he wants Elvis to find his ex-wife and his son, who he has never met。 It doesn’t take much work for Elvis to find her in a small town in Connecticut just outside New York City。 She is a bank manager。 Her son has no idea that his bio-dad is famous。 Karen has remade her whole life - from giggling wanna be actress to solid citizen and great single mom。 Now Elvis has with the most unwelcome news that Peter wants to insert himself back into her life。 Elvis is trying to decide how to handle the situation - just tell Peter he found her and let the chips fall where they may, or try to facilitate a gentler introduction since Peter will likely wreck them with his overbearing attitude。 But then Elvis learns that Karen has become a pawn with a big time mafioso。 She is being forced to launder money for the son of one of the biggest godfathers in New York。 Time to get his pal Joe Pike to back him up as he tries to figure out how to free Karen from the mafia and how to keep Peter from hurting her and her son。 Elvis is gutsy and clever。 Joe is stealthy and skilled。 Together they put themselves on the line against East Coast crime。 I enjoy these books。 Elvis reminds me of Spenser of Robert B。 Parker fame。 Smart, resourceful, and quick witted, he is a great hero。 。。。more

The third novel in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series。 This time, most of the action takes place around New York, when Elvis tries to locate an ex-wife and child of a famous (but highly immature) Hollywood director and wind up tangling with the local mafia。 Robert Crais's Lullaby Town is oddly named, as suburban Connecticut doesn't seem to fit。 Still, like all the novels I have tackled in the Cole/Pike series, it's a good read。 The third novel in the Elvis Cole and Joe Pike series。 This time, most of the action takes place around New York, when Elvis tries to locate an ex-wife and child of a famous (but highly immature) Hollywood director and wind up tangling with the local mafia。 Robert Crais's Lullaby Town is oddly named, as suburban Connecticut doesn't seem to fit。 Still, like all the novels I have tackled in the Cole/Pike series, it's a good read。 。。。more
